I usually have a hard time when books, tv shows, video games, etc., from my childhood that I grew to love, are taken and made into something that I despise. I know that projects like that usually start with good intentions, but end up being... well...they are crap.
So when I heard that Spike Jonze was taking on the task of turning the much loved book "Where The Wild Thing Are" into a live action movie, not only was I skeptical, I was actually worried that something so great, could be reduced to a steaming pile of________(insert expletive)
All it took for my mind to be set at ease was the first 60 seconds of the film; even know as I am trying to write this review, I am still in awe at how well the whole film was put together. Given that the original book was only 10 pages long and the film is 90 minutes long, you have to be expectant that there is going to be some "artistic addition" to the story. That is the great thing though, everything that is added to the story is added for a reason, and it all comes off without a hitch. Jonze has filmed a fantasy movie as if it were real, allowing us to see the world as Max see's it, full of amazing beauty and terrible fear.
I suggest that you go back and re-read the book (or read it for the first time) not really for you to be filled in on any major plot developments but mainly for the sentimental value. Then head out to the movies and go see this gorgeous film, I am sure you will agree that this is one of the best movies that have come out this year.
